Real-World Emissions and EV Testing

Why does it matter? You won’t be surprised that many vehicles use more fuel and therefore produce more emissions on-road than in the published laboratory tests, but some exceed them by more than 30% whilst others equal or even better their published lab numbers. The Program shows that lab testing is not a reliable indicator of real-world performance.
Fleets select fit for purpose vehicles based on their capabilities and then complete a total cost of ownership analysis comparing the vehicles. But it can go terribly wrong if the underlying fuel consumption figures being compared do not make for reliable relative comparisons.
The difference between two vehicles reporting the same lab test result for fuel consumption can be 20% or more in the real world. Image how wrong your projections can be for TCO and environmental outcomes.
This session will explore the 84 vehicles tested so far and explain how EVs will be tested for energy consumption and range.

SPEAKER OF THE EVENT

Jason Smith

Director – Real-World Testing Program (Australian Automobiles Association)

Jason is the Program Director at the Australian Automobile Association’s Real-World Testing Program.

An engineer, he has spent the last six years with the AAA working in technical policy development and advocacy on consumer issues such as vehicle standards, vehicle emissions, fuel quality and consumer interests. Prior to this, he spent 7 years as a test and policy engineer testing vehicles with the ANCAP Safety rating program.

Jason is a passionate consumer advocate and is leading the AAA’s Real-World Testing Program to provide consumers and car buyers with transparency through better information on the running costs and the environmental performance of new vehicles, by testing them in real-world operating conditions.
